Beginning the Journey for new Christians. Ralph F. We've begun the second major section of John's Gospel. After the Prologue , John carefully selects incidents in Jesus' life that tell us Jesus' significance, who Jesus is.

THE GOSPEL OF ST. LUKE

Who he really is. Remember John's purpose:. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Many commentators call the Book of Signs, followed by the Book of Glory , where Jesus glory is seen in his death and resurrection. Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Discourse #1: Sermon on the Mount

Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.

I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. Yes, please put up with me! I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. Because I do not love you? God knows I do! Their end will be what their actions deserve.

But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.
